Start the new year right: hear the story about the very special Lana’s The
Little House garden, and how it grew from its idyllic countryside and
woodland setting. We’ll talk about the historical developments
to led to what we call the Cottage Garden, and the factors that
influence our notions of gardens as they continue to evolve today…all while
we enjoy an easy, exhilarating walk through The Little House Garden and
grounds. |

What Makes a Garden Grand? |
What
makes a garden grander than the sum of its green? Join us as we talk about a
few design fundamentals of the garden: how to enhance your garden’s stature
with “architectural” and other elements, creating “people places” in the
garden, increasing interest and activity by inviting the wildlife
desirables, plants with more presence, and more. We’ll observe the
principles in action as we walk. |

Enrich your Home – and You -- with the Garden’s Plenty |
Come to the Little House for a garden and grounds tour, and will talk about
the ways that nature’s wealth makes us wealthy, too. The flowers are just
the beginning…we’ll see how our region’s “au naturel” offers an array of
treasures for collecting, cutting and drying, wreath making, potpourri,
herbs for the kitchen and more….just in time to think about getting the most
from your garden this year, and to dig in! |

4. Art in The Little House Garden:
Garden
Collage

After
an inspiring walk through The Little House Garden, we’ll use that inspiration
to create one-of-a-kind garden collages—working “en plein air,” the process
made popular by French Impressionists such as Claude Monet. Literally immersed
“in plain air,” we’ll gain insight from the flood of
natural light, fresh air, and everything that fills The Little House Garden.
Your completed, original work of art will be matted and ready for framing. No
artistic experience necessary. |

9. Art in The Little House Garden:
Wreathing
|
Come
for a walk in The Little House Garden, and depart with a beautiful,
one-of-a-kind wreath – created by you! We’ll each learn to make a vine wreath,
then decorate with a few choice goodies from Lana’s garden, surrounding fields
and woodland. Along the way, you’ll learn a bit about the history of wreathing
and the meanings in this circular art/craft that has been universally
practiced throughout all times and cultures. Your completed wreath can be
adapted for any season or occasion. No experience necessary. |

10. Tea Tasting |
Much like wine, tea is an art recognized
throughout the world. In this two-hour tasting, join Lana for an
insightful introduction into the complexities of tea. By sampling a
range of white, green, oolong and black teas from China, Japan, Taiwan
and India, you'll learn the methods for properly brewing each type. You
will learn how to maximize and enjoy the taste of every cup. Teas
will be accompanied by small, light bites.

About
Sara Baker Michalak -- Our Garden Workshop Presenter Since 2004:
Sara Baker Michalak propagates native wildflowers, restoring the
woodland property where she and her family built a home in the 1980s.
In her workshops and presentations, she encourages gardeners and
others to develop and support healthy natural environments based on
organic and "green" practices. Sara's writings about the natural world
appear in her book The Garden Within, published by Foot Hills
Publishing (2008); and in Nature Photographer Magazine, Buffalo Spree,
Upstate Gardeners’ Journal, and Christian Science Monitor. In
addition, Sara's visual art has garnered significant critical notice
for its representation of natural imagery and is exhibited
extensively. Sara currently serves as Arts Facilitator for Aspire of
WNY, where she provides creative arts experiences for people with
developmental disabilities.
